Riverfly Kit Bursary

In 2025, members of Cressbrook and Litton Flyfishers Club kindly raised funds with the goal of helping new Riverfly monitoring groups get started. There are various costs involved in setting up a new monitoring group from scratch, so the Riverfly Partnership is administering this donation in the form of a new Riverfly Kit Bursary.

New groups can fill in the application form below to apply for up to three Riverfly kits for their group, which we will then order and get sent out to successful applicants, reducing their fundraising requirements by £337.

NHBS, the manufacturers of the Riverfly kit, are also supporting the initiative by providing a further two free kits, so that we can help more groups.

We also accept donations so that this bursary can be kept going once the initial donation has run out. If you would like to donate, please see our Donate page, where you can specify that you would like your donation to go directly into the Kit Bursary.

Requirements for applicants:

  1. For a successful kit application, the group must be planning to have an official Riverfly training day (i.e. led by an accredited Riverfly tutor, using our official training packs), and to set up a monthly monitoring scheme on their river, the data from which must be submitted to the Riverfly Partnership’s national database.

  2. This bursary is designed for new monitoring groups, so there should be no active monitoring already taking place within the group, or at the planned locations. (You can e-mail us at info@riverflies.org to check whether there is already a Riverfly monitoring group in your area for you to join.)

  3. This bursary is only for groups that need to self-fund their Riverfly training. If you fall within the boundaries of an existing hub, the provision of kits may already be covered by your regional hub — for example, all Riverfly monitoring in Scotland is currently covered by Buglife’s Guardians of our Rivers scheme. If you are not sure whether your location is already covered, just e-mail us at info@riverflies.org.
