The Calder and Colne Rivers Trust project, which started with funding from The National Lottery in March 2011, covers the whole of the Calder (West Yorkshire) catchment. At present there are 17 active volunteers covering 17 sites (working in pairs). At present a few more volunteers are coming forward and we are investigating potential funders for a further training course. Unfortunately in May last year there was a major fire at a Chemical Works at the side of the river Colne. The water used by the fire service washed various chemicals into the river doing extensive damage to the invertebrates and fish populations. The owners of the Chemical Works are keen that we should work together in the future and we are talking to them about a possible invertebrate “re-seeding” project, etc.
