Caddis (Trichoptera) are a varied group of insects that are used in water quality assessment. They are also significant in fly fishing. Participants will be shown various methods of collecting larval and adult caddis. At the end of the course they should be able to identify any caddis larva or adult to family level, and also be able to identify a range of species. The course is aimed at biologists and naturalists who want to develop their knowledge of this group of insects. Ian Wallace, a Riverfly Partnership AMI Tutor, is the national coordinator for the Trichoptera Recording Scheme, author of many guides to caddis including the FBA key to case-bearing caddis, and curator of conchology and aquatic biology at the National Museums Liverpool.
Identifying stoneflies and mayflies

The variety of freshwater sites in the area provides many opportunities to investigate both the adults and nymphs of a range of stonefly and mayfly species. This course will provide an opportunity to gain taxonomic competence in these two manageable but important orders. The course will combine field excursions with laboratory work to build competence with the use of keys. The value of 'jizz' with live specimens, their use in ecological assessments and an introduction to the natural history of these two fascinating groups provides a balance to the identification process.

The programme includes: short presentations on the insect groups of importance to anglers, and their identification, with a chance to imitate these flies at the fly dressing bench in the afternoon.
